Description
A 1956 Metropolitan (1954 - 1962) The Nash Metropolitan, introduced in 1954, made in England for Nash. The car was designed to be used in the growing metropolitan areas as a commuter town car.
The brainchild of George Mason, President of Nash, he advanced the idea of a very small 'runabout' car to be sold by Nash dealers. Mason felt competing with the Big Three was going to get tougher in the years ahead, and Nash should try to make the types of cars that the Big Three hadn't considered making.
Mason had experience with having a basic car built in England, as the Nash-Healey was. He also knew it would be cost-effective and distribute through the U.S. Nash dealership network. So, Fisher and Ludlow, Ltd in Birmingham England, was to make the unitized bodies. Austin Motor Co, Ltd in Longbridge England, was to outfit the car with the drivetrain and do the final finishing work.
In 1954, the car hit the shores of America bearing badges proclaiming it to be the NKI Custom. The name soon changed to Metropolitan, telling the buying public more specifically what the car was intended for.,,,, 'AMC Buyer's Guide - Larry G. Mitchell (1994)
