Description
File# 0863.... On October 14, 1947 the Bell X-1 was released from a modified Boeing B-29... Test pilot Chuck Yeager became the first person to travel faster than sound, reaching a speed of 700 miles per hour - Mach 1.06 - at an altitude of 43,000 feet.
Chuck Yeager named the Bell X-1 "Glamorous Glennis", in honor of his wife.
The color orange was chosen to give the X-1 maximum visibility, for the benefit of trackiong cameras and chase planes.
