Description
File# 0934 Nose art on a US Marine Corps Douglas F3D-2N (F-10) Skyknight. taken 2012.06.13 at Empire State Aerosciences Museum.
The Skyknight began as a Douglas aircraft project launched on April 3, 1946 at the request of the US Navy. The Navy favored the F9F-2 Panther and F2H-4 Banshee, while the Skyknight would go on to see success with the Marines.
The Marines took all 237 production F3D-2 models, and in Korea, the most famous Marines were VMF(N)513, the 'Flying Nightmares', whose F3D pilots made six air-to-air night kills, taking on the superior MiG-15, as they escorted B-29s into enemy air space.
In Vietnam the EF-10B electronic warfare aircraft was regularly used until the introduction of the Grumman EA-6A. Operating from Da Nang with VMCJ-1, the EF-10B flew strike protection duties.
