Description
File#0880 The nose art on the Boeing B-29 Superfortress 'Bockscar' as displayed in 2007 at the National Museum of the USAF.
On August 6, 1945, the crew of the B-29 'Enola Gay' released an atomic bomb over Hiroshima. The devastation caused by the bomb solicited no response for the demand on Japan for unconditional surrender, and conventional bombing raids continued. On August 9th, the B-29 'Bockscar' took off from the island of Tinian with a second atomic bomb aboard. This bomb was dropped over the secondary target city of Nagasaki. After the devastation caused by this second bomb, the Japanese government made the decision to surrender unconditionally. So the B-29 Superfortress 'Bockscar' became a key in ending the war in the Pacific.
