Description
File# 0906 The nose of American Airlines Flagship Vermont, Douglas DC-7 as displayed in 2008 at the National Air & Space Museum, Washington D.C. - USA
Entering service in 1953, the Douglas DC-7 was the jewel in the crown of a dynasty of Douglas passenger aircraft.
Last of the propeller-driven airliners, the DC-7 was developed for head-to-head competition with the Lockheed Super Constellation. The DC-7 became a classic in its own right, spanning the world's oceans in a time when air commerce was slower than today, but provided luxurious service. The ultimate version, the DC-7C 'Seven Seas', was lightly enlarged and had very long range, allowing it to cover marathon distances.
American Airlines was the first to purchase the DC-7, which was in part do to a long-term, successful relationship with Douglas.... after all, it was American Airlines who insisted, over Donald Douglas' objections, build the DC-3 for us... as they say, 'the rest is history'.
