Description
File# 0889 The nose art on a Consolidated LB-30B Liberator belong to the Confederate Air Force (aka: Commemorative Air Force). Taken at MacArthur-Islip Airport in August, 1990
This LB-30, forerunner to the B-24, was used by the British in WWII, the CAF acquiring the aircraft after the war.
The first Liberators in service were six LB-30As ( with the 'LB' standing for "Land Bomber") diverted from the French contract to Britain in December 1940. The aircraft's lack of self-sealing fuel tanks was to be a major stumbling block to front-line service, so these aircraft known as Liberators, entered service with RAF Ferry Command in March 1941, Serial numbers AM258/AM263, some later went to BOAC.
The first truly operational Liberators were 20 'B-24A Conversions' (LB-30Bs) built for the USAAF, but diverted to the RAF as Liberator Mk Is (AM910/AM929).
