Description
File# 0888 The Northrop-Grumman B-2 'Spirit' as displayed in 20017 at the National Museum of the USAF.
The global spread of sophisticated air defense systems in the 1980s threatened the U. S. Air Force's ability to destroy an enemy's most valued targets. To overcome this threat, the USAF incorporated revolutionary, low-observable (stealth) technology into a long-range bomber capable of delivering large payloads of conventional or nuclear weapons. The Northrop-Grumman B-2 'Spirit' merged the aerodynamic efficiency of the flying wing design with composite materials, special coatings and classified stealth technologies. As a result, the B-2 became virtually invisible to even the most sophisticated enemy radar defense systems. The B-2 'Spirit, pictured, has been named the "Spirit of Freedom'. The 'Fire & Ice' logo was painted on an aircraft panel used to test the impact of temperature extremes on the surfaces.
