Description
File# 0876 Nose art on 'Five by Five' a Republic P-47D Thunderbolt as displayed in 2007 at the National Museum of the USAF.
Affectionately called the 'Jug', the P-47 was one of America's leading WWII fighter airplanes. It flew its first combat mission in April 1943. It was discovered to have the ability to outdive any German combat aircraft. In 1943, the addition of external fuel tanks under the its fuselage allowed this fighter to escort heavy bombers much further into German territory. The Thunderbolt also gained the reputation as an excellent low-level fighter-bomber because of its ability to absorb heavy damage and keep flying.
