'Flying Tigers'... The American volunteer Group (AVG) was led by Claire Chennault and served in China and Burma to aid China in their war against Japen. starting with 43 serviceable P-40B fighters and 84 former U.S. military pilots, their first combat occurred on December 20, 1941. The AVG was flashy, informal and very effective. In its brief combat life from December 1941 to July 1942, the AVG destroyed 292, allegedly superior, Japanese aircraft while losing eight of their own.
