Description
File# 0911..... 'Jackys Revenge' a Republic Aviation P-47D-27RE Thunderbolt as displayed, as it turns out, in the original WWII final assembly hanger... American Airpower Museum, Farmingdale, LI, New York - USA
Affectionately called the 'Jug', the P-47 was one of America's leading fighter planes of WWII. It flew its first combat mission in April 1943. It so became apparent that it could outdive any German combat aircraft, In 193, adding external fuel tanks allowed this fighter to escort heavy bombers much further into German territory. The Thunderbolt also gained the reputation as an excellent low-level fighter-bomber because of its ability to absorb heavy damage and keep flying.
