Description
File# 0865 Nose art on a Grumman F11F - Tiger, U.S. Navy VF-33 Displayed aboard the USS Intrepid, New York City NY USA
The prototype Grumman G-98 Tiger first flew, as the YF9F-9, on 30 July 1954. Grumman manufactured 201 Tigers between July 1954 and December 1958. The Tiger was the first supersonic fighter to enter U.S. Navy service. The U.S. Navy's 'Blue Angels' aerobatic team used Tigers from 1957 to 1969.
One of two F11F-1Fs was flown to a world altitude record of 76.913 ft (23,449m).
The Tiger's career in the U.S. Navy was relatively short because of the more capable Vought F8U Crusader and ongoing problems with the F11F's J65 engine. Tigers spent their last years in service as advanced pilot trainers.
