Description
File# 0895 Fuselage art on a Douglas AD-4NA Skyraider at the Planes of Fame Museum, Valle AZ in 2007.
Able to deliver an incredible array of ordnance, the Skyraider's origins began as a design for the US Navy to replace the famous SBD Dauntless dive bomber. Douglas delivered 3,180 Skyraiders to the Navy, many of whish were used in the Korean War. The A-1 long out-lived its anticipated life until people believed that the only replacement for the Skyraider was another Skyraider.
In 1963, the Air Force used the Navy Skyraider for service in Vietnam and redesignated it the A-1. Because of its ability to carry large bomb loads, absorb ground fire and fly for long periods at low altitudes, the A-1E was well suited for close support missions. In Vietnam Skyraiders shot down two Mig-17 jet fighters.
