Description
File# 0847 The pre-revolution, possibly haunted inn, located across the street from the Old First Church in Old Bennington, Vermont - USA [1995.01.22]
The Walloomsac Inn is an attention grabber due to its location and unkempt appearance. It is one of the most historic buildings in Old Bennington. The inn, was a bed and breakfast as recently as 1997/1998, now a private residence.
Sketchy history.. best info... it was built in 1764 by the first settled minister of Bennington's Old First Church for his 20 year old son are exaggerated. In fact, the inn was built by Elijah Dewey, the son, and dates to 1771. The earliest documentation is found in a deed signed in the spring of 1771 from Moses Robinson, Bennington's biggest land owner, to Elijah for a plot just over an acre in size.
The last owner, Walter Berry purchased the property around 1891 from then owner Samuel Sanford. It has been owned by the Berry family ever since.
Today, stories abound... Mr. Berry allegedly, in his will. prohibits any repairs to the building... Rumor has it some in Old Bennington are against seeing it fixed up... and of course, it is haunted!!!
