File# 0878.... Nose art on 'Fiery Ginger IV' a Republic P-47D 'Razorback' Thunderbolt as displayed in 2007 at the National Museum of the USAF.
The P-47 was one of the USAAF's most famous fighter planes of WWII. Conceived as alight-weight interceptor, it became a heavy fighter-bomber. The P-47 quickly gained a reputation for ruggedness, By the end of the war 15,600 Thunderbolts had been built. The P-47 razorback version as pictured is painted to represent that of Firey Ginger, Colonel Neel E. Kearby's aircraft. He was credited with 12 victories.
