Description
File# 0904 The Ryan NYP (New York to Paris), 'Spirit of St. Louis' hangs in the National Air & Space Museum, Washington D.C. - USA.
The NYP. less stable than the Ryan M-2 from which it was developed, did not allow Charles Lindbergh to relax much during the flight. Flags on the aircraft's nose were addedduring Lindbergh's post-flight tour of Latin America and the Caribbean. Visible in the picture is the Ryan's reliable Wright J-5 Whirlwind engine.
In February 1927, Claude Ryan received an order for a special version of his monoplane, in which a youg mail pilot, with the backing of a group of St. Louis businessmen, aimed to win a $25,000 prize for the first nonstop flight between New York and Paris. The modifications included moving the cockpit back to allow the installation of a large fuel tank and increasing the wingspan. The pilot Charles Lindbergh, reached Paris on May 21, 1927, after 33.5 hours flying.....
