Description
File# 0866 Nose art on a Douglas F3D Skyknight U.S. Navy 'Tophatters' VF-14 on board the USS Intrepid in 2005... New York City NY USA.
Conceived in 1946, the Skyknight was, from the outset, designed exclusively as a night and all-weather fighter. The F3d-1 is the only side-by-side seat fighter to have served with the Navy. The Skyknight destroyed more enemy aircraft over Korea than any other Navy or Marine type. However, its near-vintage design meant it was withdrawn as a fighter by 1959. Under the 1962 change in U.S. aircraft designations, the then obsolete Skyknight fighter became the F-10. TheF3D-2Q electronic warfare aircraft that served in Vietnam was known as the EF-10. Operating from Da Nang with VMCJ-1, the EF-10B flew strike protection duties. In Vietnam, the Marines lost a total of four EF-10Bs in combat, one to a SAM.
